Does Lovastatin Interact with Diltiazem Hydrochloride?

Lovastatin and Diltiazem Hydrochloride have a unknown drug interaction according to U.S. FDA drug labeling data. In a ten-subject randomized, open-label, 4-way crossover study, coadministration of diltiazem (120 mg BID diltiazem SR for 2 weeks) with a single 20 mg dose of lovastatin resulted in 3- to 4-fold increase in mean lovastatin AUC and C max versus lovastatin alone. Diltiazem plasma levels were not significantly affected by lovastatin or pravastatin. Patients taking both medications should consult their healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dosage of either drug. This information is based on official FDA drug labeling sourced from OpenFDA and the NIH National Library of Medicine.
