Does Tenofovir Interact with Emtricitabinetdf?
Tenofovir and Emtricitabinetdf have a unknown drug interaction according to U.S. FDA drug labeling data. 7.1 Drugs Affecting Renal Function FTC and tenofovir are primarily excreted by the kidneys by a combination of glomerular filtration and active tubular secretion [see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY (12.3)]. No drug-drug interactions due to competition for renal excretion have been observed; however, coadministration of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate with drugs that are eliminated by active tubular secretion may increase concentrations of FTC, tenofovir, and/or the coadministered drug. Drugs that decrease renal function may increase concentrations of FTC and/or tenofovir. Patients taking both medications should consult their healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dosage of either drug. This information is based on official FDA drug labeling sourced from OpenFDA and the NIH National Library of Medicine.

What To Tell Your Doctor or Pharmacist
If you are taking Tenofovir and your doctor is considering prescribing Emtricitabinetdf (or vice versa), make sure to:
- Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements
- Ask whether the benefits of combining these medications outweigh the risks for your specific situation
- Ask what symptoms to watch for that would indicate the interaction is causing problems
- Never stop or change either medication without first consulting your healthcare provider
